If you’ve bought Natracare products before, you might’ve noticed the 1% for the Planet logo on our packs. It might’ve even been one of the reasons for picking up our products. But what does being a 1% for the Planet member actually mean for us, the planet, and you? Read on to find out.
What is 1% for the Planet?
1% for the Planet is an organisation that wants to see businesses, non-profits, and individuals fighting together for climate justice. They achieve this by acting as a platform that brings businesses and individuals together with non-profits – working to benefit people and planet for donations and partnership opportunities. 1% have helped connect us directly to support goal-aligned projects around areas like plastic pollution, women’s health, and conservation. Natracare is a 1% for the Planet member and has been since 2019. We were the world’s first period product company to join as a member – something we’re incredibly proud of!
What does being a 1% for the Planet member mean?
Our commitment is to donate 1% of our annual turnover to non-profits approved by 1% for the Planet. By contributing turnover instead of profit, we not only donate more money, but we also prioritise the positive habit of giving back over our own profit as a brand. So far, in the three years of our membership we’ve donated over £550,000, with no signs of stopping soon.
So, what does that mean for me?
Each time you purchase Natracare products, you can rest assured that some of what you pay contributes positively to our planet. Every pack gives a little something towards organisations and non-profits across the globe that exist to benefit people and planet. By choosing Natracare over non 1% for the Planet period products, you’re choosing to give back.
Since joining 1% for the Planet, contributing our turnover has helped both us and you to support projects in the following areas:
- Working with Just a Drop to create community-owned solutions providing sustainable access to clean water, period products, and hygiene.
- Supporting Off the Record to connect young people in Bristol with nature during lockdown.
- Sponsoring Plastic Oceans and their Trees and Seas festival to build a bridge between ocean and forest conservation, and addressing the plastic pollution problem.
- Providing financial support to our longstanding partners, Turning Green, and their Conscious Kitchen program to provide organic food boxes to children and families in need throughout the pandemic.
Do you only give 1% of your turnover in donations?
In short, no – our donations don’t stop at 1%. We have been donating to and working in partnership with a variety of organisations for over 30 years, since 1989, and many of our donations today sit outside of our 1% for the Planet membership. This is because the causes we believe are important for a brand like ours to support don’t start and end with climate justice. While climate justice is a primary priority for us, so is the fight for racial justice, menstrual equity, intersectional feminism and more.
