Reusable vs Disposable Pads: What’s the Difference, and Which is Right for You?

When it comes to period care, there is no “one size fits all”. Choosing the right product is a personal decision, and what works for one body might not work for another. That’s why it’s important to try different period products, especially when accommodating change for your body: when just starting a period, or when your period protection needs might change, such as after giving birth, changes to birth control or during perimenopause, to figure out what works best for your flow and comfort.

Over 35 years, Natracare has researched, developed and brought to a generation or two, the best in organic and plant-based period care – including disposable and reusable options, free of toxic forever chemicals (PFAs) – because that’s not the kind of legacy we want!

In this blog, we’ll break down the differences between the Natracare by Eco Femme Reusable Pad and Natracare’s disposable pads, so you can make an informed, confident choice.

What is a Reusable Pad?

A reusable pad is a washable, cloth menstrual pad that can be used again and again.  The Natracare by Eco Femme Reusable Pad is GOTS certified Organic and validated as PFAS free. Made with 100% organic cotton, with a leak-proof PUL (polyurethane laminate) backing to keep moisture in place.  Handmade ethically by a women-led social enterprise in India.

Using a reusable pad can be a similar experience to using a disposable one – it just comes with the added step of washing after use. Here’s how to use and care for The Natracare by Eco Femme Reusable pad:

To wear:

  • Fasten the wings around your underwear using the snap buttons.

To wash:

  • Soak the used pad in cold water for 20-30 minutes.
  • Wash by hand or in the machine at below 40°C.
  • Air dry in sunlight for best results.

With proper care, Natracare by Eco Femme’s reusable pads can last for up to 75+ washes, that’s 3-5 years!

Eco Femme: A Pad with a Purpose

Eco Femme is a women-led social enterprise that creates fair-wage jobs, provides menstrual health education, and distributes free pads to those in need through their Pad for Pad programme.

Every Natracare by Eco Femme pad in our First Period Kit helps support that mission, so when you buy from Natracare, you’re empowering someone else to manage their period with dignity too.

What is a Disposable Pad?

A disposable pad is a single-use product that is quite literally, one that is disposed of after each use. But not all disposable pads are created equal.

Conventional period pads, and some claiming “natural” status, can contain around 90% plastic. Look for the tell-tale “polys” that come in the form of polyolefins, polypropylene, polyacryate, polyester, polyurethane and polyethylene! In fact, one pack can contain the equivalent of five plastic shopping bags worth of plastic! These materials never disappear, becoming microplastics lingering in our oceans and soils and moving up the food chain!

Natracare’s disposable pads are  TUV certified compostable. That’s what the Seedling mark on our packs proves to you.  Made using a certified organic cotton cover;  sustainably sourced and totally chlorine free plant-derived cellulose, and a plant-based waterproof film. Never fragrances, dyes or any other additive. Designed to offer gentle, reliable protection for every kind of flow. Better for the body, and the planet.

Reusable vs Disposable: Key Differences

Reusable vs disposable period pads

Which Should You Choose?

There is no right or wrong answer. It depends on what’s important to you and what sort of options suit a child starting a first period.

  • Reusable pads are an option for reducing waste and can feel just like regular underwear. They’re perfect for wearing at home or overnight.
  • Disposable pads are handy for school, days out, or just when you want something quick and easy. They’re ideal for experimenting with different absorbencies and style to find the best fit.

That’s why our First Period Kit includes both, so a Tween or Teen can explore, test, and decide what suits them best.

Finding Your Flow

Periods are a journey, especially for those experiencing them for the first time. The physical and emotional changes can be a lot to navigate, but being prepared helps ease anxiety and build confidence.

Natracare’s First Period Kit was created with this in mind. Including both plant-based disposables and an Eco Femme reusable pad, the kit is a gentle introduction to managing menstruation with care, comfort and choice.
