a letter from natracare’s founder, Susie Hewson
I didn’t set out to build a business. I set out to right a wrong.
In 1989, I learnt what the industry already knew: that period products being used each month were bleached with chlorine, releasing carcinogenic by-products known as dioxins and furans into the water, soil, and air. Not only did I discover the lasting, damaging effects on the entire ecosystem, but the fact that what it left behind contaminated diapers, coffee filters, and, yes, period products with chemicals of real concern.
I set out to change that. But, it was just me and a few women’s environmental organisations, and to no one’s surprise, cries for change were met with a tall wall of corporate silence. But I knew the cost of their silence would be the systemic erasure of women’s health and devastating environmental damage.
What began as a battle cry became Natracare. It was my act of defiance, showing we can design for change. It was a declaration that we deserve better for our bodies, our futures, and our planet.
when we is equal parts rallying cry and reminder: we all hold a tremendous amount of power to push for positive change.
It’s a place to gather the fire and focus of people around the world. A place to elevate our stories, our science, our leadership, and our fight. A place to ignite action for our bodies, our planet and our future.
This isn’t just a campaign. It’s a continuation of Natracare’s movement, one that reminds us that with our power to rise, we bring the health, happiness, and hope of future generations with us.
So, let’s rise and take the world with us.
Susie
“As much as I want to talk about our periods – and I do – I really want to talk about the change that can happen when we take collective action.”
— Susie Hewson, natracare founder
when we rise
We advocate for equity, dignity, and change
when we have the power to rise, we challenge stigma, spark global movements, and push for systemic change. Whether that’s fighting for period poverty, demanding dignified healthcare, or reshaping how society talks about menstruation or bladder leaks.
- Over 20 countries have now abolished the tampon tax, including UK, Kenya, and Mexico.
- Every $1 invested in menstrual health returns $8.20 in social and economic benefits including education and public health.
- Women are 2.5x more likely to demand government action on climate.
That’s the power of communities taking action.
We are designing a future where no one is held back by their biology. Our power to rise means we rise for each other – and we make space for everyone to thrive.
when we speak
We change the conversation – and the world
We challenge outdated norms, question assumptions and push for change where it matters most – in healthcare, science, policy and everyday life. Whether that’s demanding transparency, advocating for safer products, advocating for equality or ensuring real experiences are reflected in decision-making.
when we can all speak in boardrooms, courtrooms, hospitals and labs, better solutions emerge. Solutions that work for the many, not just a few.
when we have choice
We shape the future
when we have informed choice, we have the power to decide what we put in and on our bodies. Ingredient transparency gives us autonomy over our health, allowing us to understand, question and ultimately trust the products we use every day.
When information is clear and accessible, we are no longer limited by uncertainty and guesswork – we are empowered to make decisions that protect our wellbeing and shape healthier futures for all.
Whether choosing to raise children, remain child free, or delay parenthood, these decisions are both deeply personal and deeply powerful. when we can choose, we claim control over our bodies, and our futures.
