The case for organic baby toiletries

Our skin is constantly being bombarded with pollutants and irritants from the environment around us that is why Natracare has avoided using any irritating additives; colours and perfumes in its baby care toiletries - just gentle care for delicate skin. Mums and Dads want to give their babies the best and so more and more parents are choosing to feed their babies and children organic food. They are also looking closer at the ingredients used in the products they apply to their children’s skin as well as their own.

Many popular brands, widely available for use on baby skins contain harsh foaming agents like SLS, as well as synthetic preservatives such as phenoxyethanol and the Parabens, recently flagged up as a concern in a study carried out in the UK, on parabens in breast tissue. Parabens, including methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl paraben, are just one of a large group of toxic chemicals that no-one has any idea about what the long term effects are likely to be if they are used every day on human skin.

There are a whole range of chemicals widely used in toiletries and wipes about which we need to ask the question, shouldn’t we be more cautious about using products that contain such chemicals?

Toiletries designed to be used on babies and people with sensitive skin should not only exclude the chemicals listed above, but also actively avoid propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol (PEG), Isopropyl myristate, and formaldehyde releasing preservatives such as imidazolidinyl urea.

All natracare baby care toiletries are free from harsh chemical detergents such as SLS, petroleum, mineral oil, parabens and synthetic preservatives and are made from organic plant-based ingredients. They are so mild; they are ideal for delicate skin because all of our products are made from the purest organically grown essential oils such as lavender, geranium and mandarin, as well as the plant oils of hemp, sesame and sunflower, and aloe vera and jojoba. We do not use sodium lauryl sulphate or any of its close relatives in Natracare bath or shampoo to make it foam and lather. Instead, we use an amphoteric ingredient, with a long name, derived from rapeseed, that is approved by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation.

Natracare Baby Lotion with aloe vera

The lotion is ideal for delicate baby skin and is made with 70% organic ingredients . We use a combination of certified Organic Aloe vera, with its natural moisturising and soothing properties, and jojoba which helps to maintain the smoothness and softness of the skin, together with lemon scented tea-tree, lavender and sunflower and sesame oils. The lotion is vegan and biodegradable

Natracare Baby Bath with aloe vera and essential oils

A gentle foaming bath and body wash made with over 70% organic ingredients, combining the natural soothing properties of Aloe vera, with the skin conditioning properties of the essential oils of lavender and tea-tree. Natracare baby bath contains a “green” foamer” that is approved by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation for use in products of good environmental choice. The baby bath can be added whilst running the water for the bath or used as a body wash or shower gel. The product is vegan and biodegradable.

Natracare Baby shampoo with aloe vera and essential oils

Delicate hair and scalps needs a very gentle shampoo in order to not irritate the hair follicles or damage the eyes. Our shampoo is made with over 70% organic ingredients, and contains an ecological ingredient that is approved by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation. We combine the natural soothing properties of Aloe vera, with the skin conditioning properties of the essential oils of lavender and tea-tree.

Organic baby massage oil with essential oils

There have been many studies on the positive effects of massage therapy in different age groups. Amongst the most notable research findings are improved growth (e.g. in premature infants), diminished pain (e.g. fibromyalgia), decreased autoimmune problems (e.g., increased pulmonary function in asthma and decreased glucose levels in diabetes), enhanced immune function (e.g., increased natural killer cells in HIV and cancer), and enhanced alertness and performance. Many of these effects appear to be brought about by decreased stress hormones.

In asthma , a study showed the positive effects of parents massaging their asthmatic children including increased peak air flow, improved lung functions, less anxiety and reduced stress hormone (cortisol) in the children as well as a decrease in the anxiety of the parents carrying out the massage (6)

Children with Dermatitis who were massaged saw their anxiety and activity levels improved as did all measures of skin condition including less redness, lichenification, excoriation, and pruritis. In addition, the parents' anxiety levels also decreased. (7)

Infants with Down syndrome improved in muscle tone and in performance on motor tasks following massage therapy. (8)

Fathers who, for one month, gave their infants daily massages 15 minutes before putting their children to bed, showed better interaction behavior with their infants. (9)

The Use of massage oils on Infants showed fewer stress behaviours (e.g. grimacing and clenched fists) and lower cortisol levels (stress hormones) after massage than when massaging without oil. (10)
