The Nordic Ecolabel is the official Ecolabel for the Nordic countries and the EU Flower is its EU equivalent. Both systems work in similar ways with a lifecycle span analysis and continually review criteria. They are often synchronized. The Board consists of members from each national Ecolabelling Board and decides on Nordic criteria requirements for products and services. Criteria are applicable in all Nordic countries.
Nordic Ecolabelling criteria is based on life cycle analyses, from the raw materials used in the production process to the recycling of the finished product. Criteria follow the precautionary principle. For example, when uncertain of the environmental impact of some chemicals or processes, no criteria will be developed for products that contain these chemicals until more knowledge is gained on their environmental consequences.
The Nordic Ecolabel is controlled in Sweden by the Swedish Ecolabelling Board consisting of members from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the Swedish Grocers Federation, the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, the Swedish Chemicals Agency, Friends of the Earth, The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, The Swedish Consumer Agency, The Energy Agency and the Swedish Consumers´ Association. SIS Ecolabelling is a non-profit company and has no branch affiliations.
Much of the criteria are related to the climate and the global warming threats, for example energy usage, renewable energy and a product’s discharges to the air and water. In addition, there are also criteria for the use of chemicals and waste procedures as well as those relating to quality and performance of the product. The criteria levels promote products and services belonging to the most environmentally sound and take into account factors such as free trade and proportionality (cost vs. benefits).
In order to be considered for certification, a company must provide, among other things, independent testing results and documentation for the specific product. A control visit is also made. If approved, the product or service may carry the Nordic Ecolabel. The company is thereafter given a Nordic Ecolabel logo with a unique license number.
The Nordic Ecolabel logo shows that a product is environmentally-sound and its environmental claims credible.
